Drilling for oil, deafening whales
In my latest article for National Geographic News I examine how the US has taken a step closer to drilling for oil in the western Atlantic Ocean and as prospectors are unleashed on the region, it could put whales, dolphins and other marine animals at risk.
Environmental groups, including Oceana, oppose both the use of seismic air guns to map the location of oil deposits and the drilling operations that would follow. In particular the endangered North Atlantic right whale would be at risk – and there’s fewer than 500 of them left.
