Come with me and meet the seahorses…
Join me on an underwater journey in pursuit of the elusive sea creature that has captured the human imagination for thousands of years, in a blend of science, history, mythology, archaeology, art, & literature.
These exotic, seemingly prehistoric creatures exist vividly in our imaginations, and they have mesmerized scientists, artists, and storytellers throughout time with their otherworldly rarity.
In ancient Greece, half-horse, half-fish hippocampi galloped through the oceans of mythology pulling Poseidon’s golden chariot. And in Victorian England, collectors captured seahorses and put them on view in the world’s first aquariums. We can trace them back to the pages of 16th century Chinese medical texts, & today they are still prescribed to treat a host of human conditions from broken bones to a flagging libido.
Seahorses live mysterious lives, tucked away out of sight on the seafloor. Poseidon’s Steed peers over the shoulder of the scientists who have long puzzled at the unusual anatomy & strange sex lives of seahorses: male seahorses are the only males in the world that experience pregnancy and childbirth.
Seahorses rely on a healthy ocean to survive, but the marine ecosystem does not rely on them.Their delicate beauty reminds us that we rely on the seas not only to fill our dinner plates, but also to feed our imaginations.
