Dr Helen Scales is a marine biologist, writer and broadcaster. She writes about the ocean’s living wonders for readers of all ages. Her books have been adapted for stage and screen, and translated into 15 languages. They include What the Wild Sea Can Be which is longlisted for the Women’s Non-Fiction Prize and the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, and the Guardian bestseller Spirals in Time. Her children’s books include Scientists in the Wild, Antarctica which is shortlisted for the Children’s Travel Book of the year 2025 and the global bestseller What a Shell Can Tell. She writes regularly for the Guardian, teaches at Cambridge University and is a storytelling ambassador for the Save Our Seas Foundation. Helen divides her time between Cambridge, England, and the wild Atlantic coast of France.
