Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction Short List

The Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction short list has been announced, and I’m stunned that my book is one of the six.

It is a joy and honour to get this recognition and to be welcomed in by this progressive alliance of writers and readers who are drawn together by this initiative which stands for so much more than awards. The Women’s Prize is transforming the world of books for the better and it’s exciting to be part of it.

As I process this and begin to think about what comes next, I send out my deepest thanks to everyone who helps me do what I do, especially my agent Margaret Sutherland-Brown, my editors George Gibson and Clare Drysdale, my publicists Karen Duffy and John Mark Boling and all the team at Grove Atlantic and Grove Press.

The Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction is the new, sister prize to the Women’s Prize for Fiction which has been running for decades. This is only the second year of the Non-Fiction prize which was launched to redress the gender inequality in non-fiction, after research revealed a clear bias in the industry. Compared to men, women writing non-fiction earn lower advances, are less likely to be reviewed in the UK press and less likely to win prizes. Both the Fiction and Non-Fiction prizes are open to women from around the world who are published in the UK.
